HYPNOSIS

TREATMENTS – HYPNOSIS

Hypnosis is a form of treatment that induces an altered state of consciousness in the patient. This state of consciousness is different from both the waking and sleeping states. Even though a person can progress from a deeply relaxed state to a hypnotic one, relaxation is not a necessary precursor to hypnosis. In fact, a deeply hypnotised person may be experiencing such abreactive and upsetting emotions that he/she is far from being relaxed.

When a person is in the hypnotic state, their ability to unlearn old, maladaptive habits, and learn new and adaptive ones, is greatly increased. Through hypnosis, the therapist can reach deep into the layers of the patient’s personality. Thus, the patient can experience profound changes in his/her life. There are three common misconceptions about hypnosis:

  • Only weak-minded people can be hypnotised.
  • When you are hypnotised, you can be made to do things against your will.
  • Hypnosis is an occultist activity.

Contrary to these misconceptions, people who are highly hypnotisable are strong-willed individuals. Hypnosis is collaboration between the hypnotherapist and the subject. Nobody can be influenced to do anything against their will through hypnosis.

Hypnosis is useful in the treatments of stress and anxiety problems and can be used in conjunction with other forms of therapies.
