Many have to work long hours and travel across different time zones to work. It is not unusual for a person to be working in another city, in another country during the weekdays and return to their home during the weekend. Recently, I met an executive who has to travel through three different time zones within one week to carry out his job obligations.” headline=”” headline_size=”large” dash=”no” subheadline=”” el_class=”” el_style=”” dash_style=”btNormalDash”][/bt_header][bt_hr top_spaced=”not-spaced” bottom_spaced=”bottomSmallSpaced” transparent_border=”border” el_class=”” el_style=””][/bt_hr][bt_row_inner][bt_column_inner width=”1/2″][bt_text]

Work and work conditions can create stress on us. However, research has shown that it is not hard work per say that creates stress. In a research which compared the stress levels of high ranking executives such as general managers and managing directors and low ranking workers such as clerks, cleaners and janitors, the results showed that the low ranking workers experienced more stress. The conclusion is that jobs that confer little autonomy and self-direction is more stressful generally. Other research also shows that jobs that create demands that cannot be met are stressful for the worker. So, what are the characteristics of the potentially stressful work? To summaries briefly, they are:

  1. Work that disrupts our normal physical rhythms. For example, shift work which does not allow for physical adaptation, work which requires the person to travel overseas but gives little time for that person to overcome the jetlag.
  2. Work that places unfulfillable demands on the worker irrespective of his/her performance.
  3. Work where the person has little to no autonomy.
  4. Work where the person’s self-esteem is constantly under attack.
  5. Work that does not reward the person by incentives such as a job promotion, pay rise or open acknowledgement of his/her good effort.
  6. Work that is not suited for the person no matter how intensively he/she is trained.

Signs of work stress

The person can suffer stress symptoms, anxiety or depression.

There may be tell-tale signs that the person is suffering from work related stress. They are:

  1. Persistent lateness going to work.
  2. A persistent inability to meet deadlines.
  3. A subjective awareness that time goes past slowly whilst at work.
  4. Persistent tiredness and fatigue that has no organic reason, such as iron deficiency anaemia.
  5. Feeling low at work with a quick recovery in mood during lunch and at the end of the working day.
  6. Unexplained irritability.
  7. Concentration difficulty.
  8. Poor memory.

How to manage work related stress?

  1. Identify the elements in the work that are stressful.
  2. Negotiate with your employer to change those responsible elements.
  3. Do a stress relief and anxiety reduction program like the Healthy Mind Concepts “Calm Optimiser”
  4. Consider seeing a therapist.
  5. If all else fail, consider another job. Your health is more important than money.
